       Introduced  by  Sen.  BALL  --  read twice and ordered printed, and when
         printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation
       AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to  authorizing
         the  town  of  North  Salem, in the county of Westchester, to regulate
         speed limits on town highways
         THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
       BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
    1    Section  1. The opening paragraph of section 1662-a of the vehicle and
    2  traffic law is designated subdivision 1 and a new subdivision 2 is added
    3  to read as follows:
    4    2. THE TOWN BOARD OF THE TOWN OF NORTH SALEM, IN THE COUNTY  OF  WEST-
    5  CHESTER,  MAY BY LOCAL LAW ESTABLISH MAXIMUM SPEED LIMITS AT WHICH VEHI-
    6  CLES MAY PROCEED ON OR ALONG TOWN HIGHWAYS  IN  SUCH  TOWN,  OTHER  THAN
    7  STATE OR COUNTY HIGHWAYS MAINTAINED BY THE STATE OR COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF
    8  TRANSPORTATION, LOWER THAN THE FIFTY-FIVE MILES PER HOUR STATUTORY MAXI-
    9  MUM SPEED LIMIT.  NO SUCH SPEED LIMIT APPLICABLE ON OR ALONG SUCH DESIG-
   10  NATED  HIGHWAYS WITHIN SUCH TOWN SHALL BE ESTABLISHED AT LESS THAN TWEN-
   11  TY-FIVE  MILES  PER  HOUR,  EXCEPT  THAT  SCHOOL  SPEED  LIMITS  MAY  BE
   12  ESTABLISHED  AT NOT LESS THAN FIFTEEN MILES PER HOUR, FOR A DISTANCE NOT
   13  TO EXCEED ONE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED TWENTY FEET, ON A HIGHWAY PASSING A
   14  SCHOOL BUILDING, ENTRANCE OR EXIT OF A SCHOOL ABUTTING ON THE HIGHWAY.
   15    S 2. This act shall take effect on the thirtieth day  after  it  shall
   16  have become a law.
