A RESOLUTION

Recognizing March 8, 2011, as "International Women's Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, The House of Representatives acknowledges women's

4

economic, political and social achievements and pays tribute to

5

their role in strengthening and connecting communities in this

6

Commonwealth and beyond; and

7

WHEREAS, The House of Representatives joins women's groups

8

around the world who are observing "International Women's Day"

9

without regard to national boundaries, ethnicity, language,

10

culture or socioeconomic status; and

11

WHEREAS, The House of Representatives commemorates the

12

struggle for women's rights and applauds women's notable

13

progress and aspirations relative to equality, justice, peace

14

and global development; and

WHEREAS, Women in this Commonwealth, who comprise more than

2

50% of the population, and women around the world are

3

steadfastly pursuing these goals despite recessions, wars or

4

unrest, disease, oppression and the burdens of poverty; and

5

WHEREAS, Women and children are more likely than men to live

6

in poverty, with statistics indicating that 16 million women, 11

7

million men and one-fifth of all children, one-third of whom are

8

African-American children in the United States, are living in

9

poverty; and

10

WHEREAS, Despite gender-based gaps in poverty and earnings in

11

the labor force, women strive to support themselves and their

12

children in our communities; and

13

WHEREAS, The United Nations has selected "Equal access to

14

education, training and science and technology: Pathway to

15

decent work for women" as this year's "International Women's

16

Day" theme; therefore be it

17

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize March

18

8, 2011, as "International Women's Day" in Pennsylvania with

19

respect for women's rich and diverse accomplishments and

20

tireless aspirations.
