A RESOLUTION

Designating April 28, 2011, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Every year on April 28, communities and worksites

4

around the world honor friends, family members and colleagues

5

who have been killed or injured on the job; and

6

WHEREAS, The Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported

7

that in 2009, more than 4,300 workers suffered fatal workplace

8

injuries and nearly 3.3 million individuals suffered work-

9

related injuries and illnesses, and experts estimate that at

10

least 50,000 deaths occur annually as a result of occupational

11

diseases; and

12

WHEREAS, In 2009, 166 workers were lost through fatal

13

workplace accidents in this Commonwealth; and

14

WHEREAS, While news reports often focus our attention on

disastrous workplace events, most of these workers die

2

individually with little public attention; and

3

WHEREAS, It is appropriate to honor the memory of the

4

courageous and dedicated members of Pennsylvania's labor force

5

who have been injured or disabled or have died as a result of

6

workplace accidents; and

7

WHEREAS, Recognition of the integrity of Pennsylvania's work

8

force and its achievements on behalf of the economic growth of

9

our Commonwealth is necessary; and

10

WHEREAS, It is appropriate to call for vigilance and

11

increased safety in the workplace; and

12

WHEREAS, The House of Representatives wishes to pay tribute

13

to workers who have died or who have been injured or disabled in

14

workplace accidents, to honor the contributions of

15

Pennsylvania's work force and to call for increased workplace

16

safety; therefore be it

17

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April

18

28, 2011, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania.
