A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the month of May 2011 as "Older Pennsylvanians

2

Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, May has traditionally been recognized as Older

4

Americans Month in the United States, a month set aside to honor

5

older adults who are among our most treasured resources, who are

6

united by historical experiences and strengthened by diversity

7

and who interpret events through varied perspectives and

8

backgrounds to bring wisdom and insight to our communities; and 

9

WHEREAS, The Department of Health and Human Services'

10

Administration on Aging has announced that the theme of Older

11

Americans Month 2011 is "Celebrate Long-Term Living"; and

WHEREAS, Increasing numbers of adults are reaching retirement

2

age and it is especially important to note that those who were

3

born in the first year of the baby boom generation will reach

4

age 65 in 2011; and 

5

WHEREAS, Older adults deserve recognition for the

6

contributions they have made and will make to the culture,

7

economy and character of the United States and this

8

Commonwealth; and

9

WHEREAS, Recognition and respect can be provided to older

10

Pennsylvanians by increasing their opportunities to remain

11

active and engaged in community life, providing individualized

12

services and support systems to maintain their dignity,

13

independence and self-determination and combating ageist

14

attitudes by honoring their past, present and future

15

contributions; therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

17

month of May 2011 as "Older Pennsylvanians Month" in

18

Pennsylvania; and be it further

19

RESOLVED, That every citizen be urged to take time during

20

that month to honor Pennsylvania's older adults and the

21

professionals, family members and volunteers who care for many

22

of them.
