A RESOLUTION

Designating the week of April 26 through May 2, 2009, as

2

"Restaurant Week" in Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, Restaurant jobs in Pennsylvania account for 366,000

4

direct jobs, 87,200 indirect jobs and 453,200 jobs overall, or

5

7.8% of the total job base; and

6

WHEREAS, Employment growth in the restaurant industry

7

outpaced the overall economy in 2008 for the ninth consecutive

8

year, a trend that is expected to continue in 2009; and

9

WHEREAS, Each additional $1 million spent in Pennsylvania's

10

eating and drinking places generates an additional 29.8 jobs in

11

this Commonwealth; and

12

WHEREAS, Restaurant sales in Pennsylvania for 2008 totaled

13

$15.7 billion, generating tremendous tax revenues for the

14

Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, The indirect economic impact and the total economic

2

impact of the restaurant industry in Pennsylvania for 2008

3

totaled $22.9 billion and $38.6 billion, respectively; and

4

WHEREAS, Every dollar spent in eating and drinking

5

establishments in Pennsylvania generates an additional $1.25 of

6

sales for other industries in this Commonwealth; and

7

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's restaurateurs continue to show

8

leadership by running "greener" establishments, keeping pace

9

with their patrons' interest in environmental issues and by

10

offering additional menu choices reflective of their patrons'

11

interest in nutrition and healthy living; therefore be it

12

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

13

week of April 26 through May 2, 2009, as "Restaurant Week" in

14

Pennsylvania for the purpose of recognizing and supporting one

15

of this Commonwealth's most integral industries.
