A RESOLUTION

  

1

Designating the week of May 17 through 23, 2009, as "Emergency

2

Medical Services Week" in Pennsylvania; designating May 21,

3

2009, as "Emergency Medical Services Day" in Pennsylvania;

4

designating May 22, 2009, as "Emergency Medical Services

5

Personnel Day" in Pennsylvania; and designating May 23, 2009,

6

as "Moment of Silence Day" in Pennsylvania.

7

WHEREAS, "Emergency Medical Services Week" brings together

8

local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and

9

to honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day

10

lifesaving services of the medical front line; and

11

WHEREAS, The theme for "EMS Week" in 2009 is "EMS, a Proud

Partner in Your Community"; and

2

WHEREAS, The emergency medical services system in this

3

Commonwealth has been developed to provide essential emergency

4

services and care for sick and injured persons and frequently

5

acts as a health care safety net for many Commonwealth residents

6

and visitors; and

7

WHEREAS, The citizens of this Commonwealth benefit daily from

8

this system and from the commitment, dedication, knowledge,

9

skill, specialized education and services of those providers who

10

devote their time and energy to saving the lives of others and

11

who perform extraordinary public service under stressful and

12

even hazardous conditions; and

13

WHEREAS, Rapid access to quality and professional emergency

14

medical services and care dramatically improves the probability

15

of survival and recovery for persons who experience sudden

16

illness or injury; and

17

WHEREAS, The EMS community consists of volunteer and paid

18

providers, including physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency

19

medical technicians, aeromedical personnel, first responders,

20

ambulance attendants, EMS vehicle operators, police officers,

21

firefighters and emergency services dispatchers, as well as

22

educators and administrators who support and assist providers

23

and the public; and

24

WHEREAS, In appreciation and recognition of the organized and

25

coordinated efforts of the EMS system in this Commonwealth,

26

professionals who directly provide services and those who

27

support and assist services, Pennsylvania sets aside a week to

28

commemorate, appreciate, recognize and support planned

29

activities throughout the State; and

30

WHEREAS, "Emergency Medical Services Week" further informs

the citizens of this Commonwealth of the availability,

2

importance and capability of their EMS system, educates them

3

about injury and illness prevention and what to do when

4

confronted with a medical emergency and encourages them to learn

5

cardiopulmonary resuscitation, plan and practice home and

6

highway safety and instruct all family members on the proper and

7

appropriate use of the EMS system; therefore be it

8

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

9

value and the accomplishments of the emergency medical services

10

community by designating the week of May 17 through 23, 2009, as

11

"Emergency Medical Services Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it

12

further

13

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 21,

14

2009, as "Emergency Medical Services Day" in Pennsylvania to

15

acknowledge and recognize the ambulance services, fire

16

departments and police departments who provide and support

17

emergency medical services in this Commonwealth; and be it

18

further

19

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 22,

20

2009, as "Emergency Medical Services Personnel Day" in

21

Pennsylvania for the purpose of appreciating, supporting and

22

recognizing the professionals whose day-to-day lifesaving

23

services ensure that the emergency medical services system

24

continues serving on health care's front line; and be it further

25

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 23,

26

2009, as "Moment of Silence Day" in Pennsylvania to honor and

27

remember civilian and military emergency medical service

28

providers who have made the ultimate sacrifice and given their

29

lives in the line of duty, with emergency medical services

30

organizations participating, where practical and reasonable, in
