A RESOLUTION

  

1

Urging the United States Congress to pass H.R.1618 and S.779.

2

WHEREAS, Highway safety is an issue that is very important to

3

many Pennsylvanians; and

4

WHEREAS, In 2007, 4,808 people were killed and an additional

5

100,000 people injured in automobile accidents involving large

6

trucks, which is the equivalent of 52 major airline crashes per

7

year or one major airline crash each week for a year; and

8

WHEREAS, The chances of a big truck crash resulting in death

9

or serious injury increases with each extra ton over the current

10

80,000-pound limit; and

11

WHEREAS, A 100,000-pound truck takes 25% longer to stop than

12

an 80,000-pound truck; and

13

WHEREAS, Congressman James McGovern and Senator Frank

14

Lautenberg have introduced the Safe Highways and Infrastructure

15

Preservation Act, which prohibits states from allowing certain

16

heavy trucks to operate on the National Highway System,

17

including the Interstate Highway System, unless authorized by

the state before June 1, 2008; and

2

WHEREAS, The Teamsters Union and the Owner-Operator

3

Independent Drivers Association support this legislation; and

4

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is fifth in terms of total large truck

5

fatalities between 2003 and 2007, with a total of 983 people

6

killed; therefore be it

7

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the

8

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge the United States Senate and

9

the United States House of Representatives to agree to the Safe

10

Highways and Infrastructure Preservation Act, H.R.1618 and

11

S.779, respectively; and be it further

12

RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to

13

the President of the United States, to the presiding officers of

14

each house of Congress and to each member of Congress from

15

Pennsylvania for immediate action.
