A RESOLUTION

Honoring the Borough of Dormont on its 100th anniversary.

2

WHEREAS, Dormont Borough, Allegheny County, became the first

3

independent, outlying municipality in the South Hills of the

4

City of Pittsburgh when it was incorporated on March 31, 1909;

5

and

6

WHEREAS, Dormont Borough was originally fashioned as a

7

borough from parts of Scott and Union Townships and later

8

annexed part of Scott Township in 1909, two additional parts of

9

Union Township in 1913 and 1916 and a portion of Mt. Lebanon

10

Township in January 1921, giving it a total area of just less

11

than one square mile; and

12

WHEREAS, When the South Hills Board of Trade created Dormont

13

Borough it derived the name from the French "mont d’or" meaning

14

"mountain of gold"; and

15

WHEREAS, The original intent was to remain separate for a

16

limited time and eventually join the City of Pittsburgh, until a

vocal group of citizens opposed to remitting taxes to the city

2

were successful in preventing the merger, keeping Dormont

3

Borough independent to this day; and

4

WHEREAS, The area was nearly inaccessible until 1903 to 1904,

5

when the streetcar tunnel was completed through Mt. Washington,

6

leading to the launch of the "trolley" line that exists today as

7

the Light Rail Transit System; and

8

WHEREAS, Rapid development followed the construction of the

9

streetcar tunnel and the Liberty Tunnels, as did a rapid

10

increase in population, an astounding 478% from the late 1920s

11

to the late 1930s; and

12

WHEREAS, Today, 100 years after its incorporation, Dormont

13

Borough provides its citizens with a large swimming pool, two

14

parks, basketball and tennis courts, a Little League field, a

15

fine library, a children’s playground and seasonal activities

16

for individuals of all ages, enabling the borough to truly live

17

up to its name as a "mountain of gold"; therefore be it

18

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the Borough

19

of Dormont, Allegheny County, on the 100th anniversary of its

20

founding; and be it further

21

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be delivered to the

22

elected and appointed officials of Dormont Borough at: Dormont

23

Borough, Municipal Building, 1444 Hillsdale Avenue, Dormont,

24

Pennsylvania 15216-2019.
