A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the month of August 2009 as "Stevens Johnson

2

Syndrome Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a severe adverse

4

reaction to medication that, if untreated, can result in death;

5

and

6

WHEREAS, Drug reactions are one of the leading causes of

7

death in the United States; and

8

WHEREAS, Adverse drug reactions account for approximately

9

150,000 deaths per year in the United States, making drug

10

reactions the fourth leading cause in death in the United

11

States; and

12

WHEREAS, SJS is a debilitating adverse drug reaction that can

13

be caused by almost any medication, even over-the-counter drugs;

14

and

15

WHEREAS, A large number of SJS victims are children, although

SJS does not discriminate based on age, race or gender; and

2

WHEREAS, Public awareness of the early symptoms of SJS and

3

prompt medical attention are essential to minimizing immediate

4

and long-term adverse effects; therefore be it

5

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

6

month of August 2009 as "Stevens Johnson Syndrome Awareness

7

Month" in Pennsylvania.
