A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of March 2012 as "Hibernian Heritage

2

Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, The Ancient Order of Hibernians, the oldest Irish

4

Catholic organization in America, was founded concurrently in

5

New York and Pennsylvania in May 1836; and

6

WHEREAS, Members' roots can be traced back 300 years earlier

7

when their ancestors risked their lives to keep the Irish

8

language, culture and Roman Catholic religion alive in their

9

beloved Ireland; and

10

WHEREAS, The twin goals of the Ancient Order of Hibernians

11

are to assist in the reunification of Ireland and promote Irish

12

culture; and

13

WHEREAS, The Ancient Order of Hibernians seeks to aid the

newly arrived Irish, both economically and socially, and is

2

among the first to welcome new Irish immigrants to the United

3

States; and

4

WHEREAS, There are more than 80,000 members of the Hibernians

5

in 46 states, Canada and Ireland; and

6

WHEREAS, The Lackawanna County Board of Ancient Order of

7

Hibernians oversees the six divisions of Hibernians across the

8

length and breadth of Lackawanna County having more than 450

9

members; and

10

WHEREAS, Those six honorable divisions that do good works are

11

named: John F. Kennedy, division one of Scranton; Msgr. William

12

Farrell, division two of Carbondale; The O'Neill Brothers,

13

division three of Minooka; Paul Hook O'Malley, division four of

14

West Scranton; Firefighter Joseph Flannery, division five of

15

Taylor; and Father Patrick D. Healey, division six of Scranton;

16

and

17

WHEREAS, The Ancient Order of Hibernians has chapters in the

18

following counties in Pennsylvania: Adams, Allegheny, Berks,

19

Bucks, Cambria, Carbon, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Lebanon,

20

Lehigh, Luzerne, Lycoming, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton,

21

Northumberland, Philadelphia, Schuylkill and York that include

22

thousands of members; and

23

WHEREAS, The Ancient Order of Hibernians supports a multitude

24

of charities, such as the Women's Resource Center, myeloma

25

cancer research and various food and clothing banks and

26

pantries, and funds various education scholarships, family

27

assistance and veterans services; therefore be it

28

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

29

month of March 2012 as "Hibernian Heritage Month" in

30

Pennsylvania and recognize the community services, assistance

and other great charity work that the Ancient Order of Hibernian

2

chapters across this Commonwealth do to improve the quality of

3

life in their communities and throughout Pennsylvania.
