| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Congratulating Wilkes University on the occasion of its 75th |
2 | anniversary. |
3 | WHEREAS, Wilkes University was founded in 1933 as Bucknell |
4 | University Junior College and during 2008 marked its 75th |
5 | anniversary; and |
6 | WHEREAS, It became an independent college in 1940 and a |
7 | university in 1990; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Wilkes University is committed to educating students |
9 | for lifelong learning and success in a constantly evolving and |
10 | multicultural world through a commitment to individualized |
11 | attention, exceptional teaching and academic excellence; and |
12 | WHEREAS, During the course of its history, Wilkes University |
13 | has been a partner with the City of Wilkes-Barre of Luzerne |
14 | County and the region to grow the region's economic base and |

1 | improve its quality of life by educating more than 25,000 |
2 | students to become leaders in their fields of endeavor; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Wilkes University delivers an economic impact of |
4 | more than $130 million to Northeastern Pennsylvania from its |
5 | annual undergraduate and graduate student population of 3,500 |
6 | and its more than 400 employees; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Wilkes University has helped revitalize the City of |
8 | Wilkes-Barre and the region, one of its strategic priorities, |
9 | through the careful stewardship of some of the city's finest |
10 | architectural landmarks, the acquisition of important office |
11 | space and joint efforts on economic matters; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Through innovative and collaborative efforts, the |
13 | university has helped bring a Barnes & Noble bookstore into |
14 | downtown Wilkes-Barre and helped establish regional policy and |
15 | planning organizations like the Joint Urban Studies Center; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Wilkes University has contributed to the quality of |
17 | life and cultural vitality of the region through its commitment |
18 | to the visual and performing arts, cultural programming and |
19 | selection of world-class speakers who have helped focus national |
20 | attention on our region; therefore be it |
21 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate |
22 | Wilkes University on the occasion of its 75th anniversary and |
23 | send the university wishes for many more years of success. |
