A RESOLUTION

Proclaiming the month of May 2010 as "American Stroke Month" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term

4

disability and the third leading cause of death in the United

5

States, killing more than 137,000 people nationwide and more

6

than 7,000 in this Commonwealth each year; and

7

WHEREAS, Warning signs of stroke include sudden numbness or

8

weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the

9

body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding;

10

sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble

11

walking, dizziness and loss of balance or coordination; and

12

sudden severe headache with no known cause; and

13

WHEREAS, Americans are more aware of the risk factors and

warning signs for stroke than in the past, but two in five

2

adults still cannot identify any symptoms; and

3

WHEREAS, The actions for "American Stroke Month 2010" are to

4

Take 2 to Save 2 to encourage people to take two minutes to save

5

two lives by sending two health messages to two people that they

6

know who may smoke, be overweight, have high blood pressure,

7

diabetes or a family history of heart disease or stroke who are

8

at increased risk of being disabled or dying from a stroke, and

9

promote the program "Power To End Stroke," to reduce stroke in

10

African Americans, who are at particularly high risk of the

11

disease, by empowering them to reduce their risk, recognize the

12

warning signs and respond quickly; and

13

WHEREAS, New and effective treatments have been developed to

14

treat and minimize the severity and damaging effects of strokes,

15

but much more research is needed; therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives proclaim May 2010

17

as "American Stroke Month" in Pennsylvania and urge all the

18

citizens of this Commonwealth to familiarize themselves with the

19

risk factors associated with stroke, recognize the warning signs

20

and symptoms and on first signs of a stroke dial 9-1-1

21

immediately so that we might begin to reduce the devastating

22

effects of stroke on our population.
