A RESOLUTION

Designating the week of May 24 through 30, 2010, as "Aevidum,

2

Pennsylvania!" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS,  "Aevidum, Pennsylvania!" was created to raise

4

awareness of the warning signs of depression and suicide among

5

students and staff at all public and private schools across this

6

Commonwealth, educate school personnel about mental illness,

7

recognize depression as an illness that can be treated and

8

shatter the shame associated with mental illness; and

9

WHEREAS, The Aevidum organization was founded at Cocalico

10

High School after a student completed suicide in 2003; and

11

WHEREAS, Aevidum students diligently worked on their mission,

12

reaching thousands of students, garnering prestigious awards

13

from mental health organizations and SADD and partnering with

14

the Minding Your Mind Foundation and Dooligus, a band that

composed a song called "Aevidum," to further broaden the cause;

2

and

3

WHEREAS, Four thousand one hundred eighty-nine young people

4

completed suicide in 2006, making it the third leading cause of

5

death among people 15 to 24 years of age; and

6

WHEREAS, Public and private schools across this Commonwealth

7

are devastated by suicide; and

8

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is one of the leading states for

9

suicide rates on the East Coast; and

10

WHEREAS, Depression can be revealed and successfully treated;

11

and

12

WHEREAS, The word "aevidum" and its message are being spread

13

to provide hope and assurance to those who are depressed and

14

ultimately to save lives; therefore be it

15

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives strive to make

16

students and teachers across this Commonwealth aware of the

17

warning signs of depression and suicide; and be it further

18

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives help the public

19

to recognize that depression is a 100% treatable illness; and be

20

it further

21

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives help the public

22

to shatter the shame associated with mental illness; and be it

23

further

24

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

25

week of May 24 through 30, 2010, as "Aevidum, Pennsylvania!" in

26

Pennsylvania.
