A RESOLUTION

  

1

Honoring the life and expressing condolences upon the passing of

2

Sherman Alexander Hemsley.

3

WHEREAS, Sherman Alexander Hemsley was born February 1, 1938,

4

in Philadelphia; and

5

WHEREAS, Mr. Hemsley attended Barrat Middle School, Central

6

High School for 9th grade and Edward W. Bok Technical High

7

School for 10th grade until he decided to join the United States

8

Air Force; and

9

WHEREAS, Mr. Hemsley served in the United States Air Force

10

for four years, and following his discharge, he returned to his

11

hometown of Philadelphia where he worked as a postal clerk

12

during the day while attending Philadelphia's Academy of

13

Dramatic Arts in the evening; and

14

WHEREAS, In 1967, Mr. Hemsley moved to New York City to

15

pursue his acting career; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hemsley joined the Negro Ensemble Company where

2

he appeared in off-Broadway productions, and later he joined

3

Vinnette Carroll's Urban Arts Company where he appeared in the

4

following productions: But Never Jam Today, The Lottery, Old

5

Judge Mose is Dead, Moon on a Rainbow Shawl, Step Lively Boys,

6

Croesus and The Witch; and

7

WHEREAS, In 1970, Mr. Hemsley was cast as the character

8

Gitlow in the Broadway musical Purlie, and as a result of his

9

stellar performance as Gitlow, Mr. Hemsley was introduced to

10

television audiences as Archie Bunker's neighbor, George

11

Jefferson, in All in the Family in 1973; and

12

WHEREAS, Mr. Hemsley's role as George Jefferson became so

13

popular among television audiences that it led to a spinoff

14

series entitled The Jeffersons, which debuted in January of

15

1975; and

16

WHEREAS, The Jeffersons became quite successful, earning the

17

fourth spot in the 1975 Nielson ratings, and remained a

18

household favorite for 11 seasons through 1985; and

19

WHEREAS, Mr. Hemsley continued his television career,

20

starring as Deacon Ernest Frye in the series Amen beginning in

21

1986, which ran for five seasons until 1991; and

22

WHEREAS, Mr. Hemsley also participated in television shows as

23

a voice actor and served as a voice actor in the live-action

24

puppet series Dinosaurs in which he played Bradley P. Richfield;

25

and

26

WHEREAS, Dinosaurs ran for five seasons, ending in 1994; and

27

WHEREAS, In addition to his acting career, Mr. Hemsley had a

28

passion for music, was an accomplished jazz keyboardist and

29

released a single entitled Ain't That a Kick in the Head; and

30

WHEREAS, Sherman Hemsley passed away at the age of 74 on July

WHEREAS, Mr. Hemsley will be remembered for his humor, quick

3

wit and creative comedic talent; therefore be it

4

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life of

5

Sherman Hemsley, express its sadness upon his passing and offer

6

its condolences to his family and friends; and be it further

7

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

8

the family of Sherman A. Hemsley.
