A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the laudatory work of the Congressional Medal of

2

Honor Foundation to develop curriculum that underscores the

3

importance of bravery, dedication and service before self.

4

WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor is the nation's highest award for

5

valor in military action against an enemy force; and

6

WHEREAS, Recipients have demonstrated acts "of personal

7

bravery or self-sacrifice so conspicuous as to clearly

8

distinguish the individual above his comrades and must have

9

involved risk of life"; and

10

WHEREAS, In the nearly 150 years since the establishment of

11

the medal in 1861, fewer than 3,500 individuals have been

12

recipients of the honor; and

13

WHEREAS, Three hundred seventy-eight Pennsylvanians have been

14

awarded the Medal of Honor, a total higher than all but one

15

other state; and

16

WHEREAS, The Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation has

17

developed a curriculum to link the symbolism of the medal and

18

the experiences of its recipients with middle school and high

school classrooms; and

WHEREAS, The School District of the City of Erie, the

3

Wattsburg Area School District and the General Electric

4

Foundation have played leadership roles in implementing this

5

curriculum; and

6

WHEREAS, Approximately 4,000 students have been inspired by a

7

curriculum that makes important connections between compelling

8

individual stories and the ideals and principles on which our

9

nation was founded; and

10

WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor curriculum creates additional

11

connections between schools, families and the community;

12

therefore be it

13

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the laudatory work of the

14

Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation to develop curriculum

15

that underscores the importance of bravery, dedication and

16

service before self; and be it further 

17

RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage the Congressional Medal

18

of Honor Foundation to continue its vital work, thereby reaching

19

more schools and students across this Commonwealth.
