| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Noting with sadness the death of the inimitable Philadelphia |
2 | Phillies announcer Harry Kalas and extolling his broadcasting |
3 | legacy. |
4 | WHEREAS, Harry Kalas is revered in the Phillies' Clubhouse, |
5 | Citizens Bank Park, the City of Philadelphia and homes and |
6 | ballparks nationwide for his integral calls and enthusiasm for |
7 | the game of baseball; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Harry Kalas proudly called the last inning as the |
9 | Phillies captured the 2008 World Series championship; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Harry Kalas, who was born March 26, 1936, in |
11 | Naperville, Illinois, died April 13, 2009, in Washington, DC, at |
12 | 73 years of age, leaving behind his wife Eileen, sons Todd, Brad |
13 | and Kane, and legions of grieving friends, colleagues and fans; |
14 | and |
15 | WHEREAS, Harry Kalas earned a degree in speech, radio and |

1 | television from the University of Iowa in 1959 and was drafted |
2 | into the Army shortly thereafter; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Harry Kalas was granted an early discharge from the |
4 | Army to embark on his broadcasting career; and |
5 | WHEREAS, A sports announcer since 1958, Harry Kalas joined |
6 | the Phillies radio and television broadcast team in 1971; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Before coming to the City of Philadelphia, Harry |
8 | Kalas was a broadcaster for the Houston Astros and for the |
9 | Hawaii Islanders and the University of Hawaii, where his home |
10 | run call was: "Tell that ball, aloha!"; and |
11 | WHEREAS, With the Phillies, Harry Kalas was a longtime |
12 | broadcasting partner and best friend of the late Richie "Whitey" |
13 | Ashburn and was widely known for his famous home run call, |
14 | "Outta here!"; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Harry Kalas earned 18 Pennsylvania Sportscaster of |
16 | the Year awards; and |
17 | WHEREAS, In 2002 Harry Kalas was inducted into the |
18 | broadcasters' wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame and honored as a |
19 | recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award for contributions to the |
20 | game; and |
21 | WHEREAS, In 2003 Harry Kalas was recognized as a charter |
22 | inductee into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame; and |
23 | WHEREAS, Harry Kalas earned further recognition as a National |
24 | Football League radio broadcaster and NFL Films narrator; and |
25 | WHEREAS, Harry Kalas voiced Campbell's Chunky Soup |
26 | commercials and was, for five years, the voice of Animal |
27 | Planet's Puppy Bowl; and |
28 | WHEREAS, Memorial tributes to Harry Kalas include an HK patch |
29 | sewn on the front of all official Phillies jerseys, to be worn |
30 | the entire season; and |

1 | WHEREAS, In his honor, the Citizens Bank Park television |
2 | booth is being named the Harry Kalas Broadcast Booth; therefore |
3 | be it |
4 | RESOLVED, That the Senate note with sadness the death of the |
5 | inimitable Philadelphia Phillies announcer Harry Kalas and extol |
6 | his broadcasting legacy; and be it further |
7 | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to |
8 | Mrs. Eileen Kalas in care of the Philadelphia Phillies, 1 |
9 | Citizens Bank Way, Philadelphia, PA 19148. |
