relating to including a personal financial literacy component in | ||
certain public school mathematics courses. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Section 28.0021(a), Education Code, is amended | ||
to read as follows: | ||
(a) The Texas essential knowledge and skills and, as | ||
applicable, Section 28.025 shall require instruction in personal | ||
financial literacy in: | ||
(1) each mathematics course in kindergarten through | ||
grade eight; and | ||
(2) one or more courses required for high school | ||
graduation. | ||
SECTION 2. Section 31.0231(a), Education Code, is amended | ||
to read as follows: | ||
(a) The commissioner shall adopt a list of: | ||
(1) electronic textbooks; and | ||
(2) instructional material that conveys information | ||
to the student or otherwise contributes to the learning process, | ||
including tools, models, and investigative materials designed for | ||
use as part of the foundation curriculum for: | ||
(A) science in kindergarten through grade five; | ||
and | ||
(B) personal financial literacy in kindergarten | ||
through grade eight. | ||
SECTION 3. For purposes of the textbook review and adoption | ||
requirements under Section 31.022, Education Code, the State Board | ||
of Education shall review and adopt mathematics textbooks that | ||
satisfy the requirements of Section 28.0021, Education Code, as | ||
amended by this Act, on the next scheduled review and adoption cycle | ||
for mathematics textbooks after the effective date of this Act. | ||
SECTION 4. This Act applies beginning with the 2011-2012 | ||
school year. | ||
SECTION 5. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2011. |
