R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Proud residents of Missouri City are gathering in |
|
Austin on May 2, 2013, to celebrate Missouri City Day at the State |
|
Capitol; and |
|
WHEREAS, Situated along the Brazos River a few miles |
|
southwest of Houston, the town was created by real estate promoters |
|
R. M. Cash and L. E. Luckle, who called it a "land of genial sunshine |
|
and eternal summer"; another promoter, W. R. McElroy, named it |
|
Missouri City to attract residents of St. Louis; registered in |
|
1894, the "Show Me City" was originally an agricultural hub for |
|
local farmers and ranchers, shipping cotton, corn, cattle, and |
|
sugarcane, and oil and natural gas were discovered nearby in the |
|
1920s; the city was incorporated in 1956; and |
|
WHEREAS, Today, this thriving community of 70,000 people is |
|
winning accolades as an ideal place to live and raise a family; CNN |
|
Money magazine has listed the city in the top 100 Best Places to |
|
Live among the nation's small cities and as one of the nation's 10 |
|
most affordable cities; CQ Press has placed it among the 100 safest |
|
towns in America, and a Rice University study cited it as one of the |
|
most diverse municipalities in the Houston area; and |
|
WHEREAS, Missouri City's residents may take advantage of the |
|
many fine opportunities for recreation, including nearly two dozen |
|
parks, a 25,000-square-foot Recreation and Tennis Center, and the |
|
city-owned, 36-hole Quail Valley Golf Course, which was named Best |
|
Value Under $50 by Avid Golfer magazine; and |
|
WHEREAS, Conveniently located only minutes from the |
|
amenities of Houston, Missouri City is strategically located close |
|
to major freeways and rail lines, George Bush Intercontinental |
|
Airport and William P. Hobby Airport, and the Port of Houston; |
|
commuters benefit from ready access to two METRO Park and Ride |
|
locations; and |
|
WHEREAS, The residents of Missouri City may indeed take great |
|
pride in their dynamic community and in the care with which they are |
|
building a bright tomorrow while preserving the city's small-town |
|
charm; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize May 2, 2013, as Missouri City Day at |
|
the State Capitol and extend to the delegation sincere best wishes |
|
for a memorable and meaningful visit to Austin. |
