WHEREAS, Sam Bennett of Texas A&M University reached a new | ||
level of achievement in his golf career by winning the 2022 | ||
U.S. Amateur championship; and | ||
WHEREAS, Joining the nation's other top amateur players in | ||
Paramus, New Jersey, from August 15 through 21, Mr. Bennett closed | ||
out the event with an exceptional performance in the 36-hole | ||
championship round; with Texas A&M golf coach Brian Kortan serving | ||
as his caddie, he gained a three-shot advantage over his match play | ||
opponent during the first 18 holes; he continued his momentum down | ||
the stretch before finding himself clutching a one-shot lead on the | ||
final tee; demonstrating tremendous poise, he parred the hole to | ||
claim a hard-fought victory and the right to hoist the coveted | ||
Havemeyer Trophy; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Bennett holds the No. 2 spot in the World | ||
Amateur Golf Rankings, and he defeated five players ranked in the | ||
top 30 over the course of the U.S. Amateur tournament; by reaching | ||
the title match, he earned an exemption to the 2023 U.S. Open and is | ||
eligible to compete in that event as an amateur or a professional; | ||
he also received amateur-status invitations to the 2023 British | ||
Open Championship and the 2023 Masters Tournament; and | ||
WHEREAS, During his tenure as a member of the Aggie golf team, | ||
Mr. Bennett has twice been selected as a PING First Team | ||
All-American; he was especially impressive over the course of the | ||
2021-2022 season, competing in 10 tournaments and breaking the | ||
school record for lowest stroke average; his efforts earned him the | ||
Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Year accolade for 2022, and | ||
he was a finalist for the Ben Hogan and Fred Haskins Awards; and | ||
WHEREAS, In conquering the U.S. Amateur field, Sam Bennett | ||
has earned a place in the pantheon of elite golfers who have claimed | ||
the tournament crown, and he may indeed reflect with pride on this | ||
exceptional accomplishment; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby congratulate Sam Bennett on winning the 2022 | ||
U.S. Amateur golf championship and extend to him sincere best | ||
wishes for continued success; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Mr. Bennett as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. | ||
