R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, The city of San Antonio sustained a great loss on
  June 21, 2013, with the death of Daniel G. San Miguel, Jr., the
  father of our esteemed colleague, Senator Leticia Van de Putte, and
  a beloved resident of the community; and
         WHEREAS, Born on May 29, 1931, Mr. San Miguel was the son of
  Daniel and Velia San Miguel; he grew up in the old Mercado area of
  San Antonio, where his father was the proprietor of La Botica
  Guadalupana on Produce Row in what is now Market Square; after
  graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, he went on to attend
  St. Mary's University, and in his junior year, he won a national
  poetry contest; he later proudly served his country in the United
  States Army during the Korean War; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. San Miguel taught English and coached in the
  Edgewood Independent School District before transitioning to a
  career as an investigator; he served Bexar County as a deputy
  sheriff and as an investigator for the district attorney's and
  county coroner's offices, and for more than two decades, he was a
  private investigator for a number of prestigious law firms and
  other clients; in addition, he served as director of the City of San
  Antonio Model Cities Program; and
         WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Mr. San Miguel shared his love
  of sports with his children by coaching their CYO baseball, track,
  and Pony League teams; as they grew older, he expanded his volunteer
  endeavors, working on political campaigns, participating in
  veterans' events, and giving inspirational talks and poetry
  readings; he gave generously of his time and talents as a frequent
  guest at Harmony Schools, where he recited poems and encouraged
  patriotism by reading to the students about United States history,
  the military, and the nation's great leaders; and
         WHEREAS, In 2004, Mr. San Miguel published a collection of
  autobiographical poems entitled The Winter of My Years, and he
  wrote movingly in the title verse, "I have no answers, no
  regrets/only the experience of life and memories"; he subsequently
  received the Hispanic Heritage Award from La Prensa, and he was
  awarded a Fulbright-Hays grant as well; and
         WHEREAS, Daniel San Miguel touched many hearts through his
  poetry and his many kind acts, and his commitment to his family, his
  community, and his country will remain a lasting source of
  inspiration to those he has left behind; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
  Daniel G. San Miguel, Jr., and extend sincere condolences to the
  members of his family: to his wife of 35 years, Barbara San Miguel;
  to his children, Senator Leticia Van de Putte and her husband, Pete,
  Daniel San Miguel III, Annabelle Garcia and her husband, federal
  Judge Orlando Garcia, Rosanne Valenzuela and her husband, Pastor
  John Valenzuela, and Roland San Miguel and his wife, Cindy, and to
  their mother, Belle San Miguel Ortiz; to his grandchildren,
  Dr. Nichole Van de Putte-Stiles and her husband, Jason, Vanessa Van
  de Putte, Henry P. Van de Putte III and his wife, Rena, Gregory Van
  de Putte and his wife, Samantha Isaacs, Isabella Van de Putte, Paul
  Van de Putte, Andrea Gonzales, Daniel San Miguel IV, Adriana San
  Miguel, Angela San Miguel, Yvonne Valenzuela, Moses Valenzuela,
  Megan Valenzuela, Brian Valenzuela, Timothy Valenzuela, Sean
  Valenzuela, Juan Rolando San Miguel, and Alejandro San Miguel; to
  his great-grandchildren, Julian, Jove, and Marlo Stiles, Elliot
  Taylor, and Asher Van de Putte; to his sisters-in-law, Mary Louise
  San Miguel and Elanora Hurst; to his brother-in-law, Sydney
  Spencer; and to his many other relatives and friends; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Daniel G.
  San Miguel, Jr.
