  H.R. No. 259

R E S O L U T I O N

         WHEREAS, United Way of El Paso County is celebrating 90 years
  of meaningful service to the community; and
         WHEREAS, Organized by members of the Kiwanis Club, United Way
  of El Paso County was chartered in 1923 as the El Paso Community
  Chest to consolidate the fund-raising efforts of local charitable
  groups; that same year, in the first community-wide fund-raising
  endeavor in city history, the group initiated a one-week campaign
  to collect $150,000 for various humanitarian projects; and
         WHEREAS, In 1957, the Community Chest became the United Fund
  of El Paso and El Paso County, which was restructured to make
  donors, rather than charitable agencies, members of the
  corporation; further change came in 1976, when the organization
  adopted its current name and broadened its function to include
  planning projects and allocating funds; and
         WHEREAS, Today, United Way of El Paso County is governed by
  board members that include community volunteers as well as
  representatives from the business, labor, and education sectors;
  evolving economic and social conditions of the last decade have led
  to a more targeted approach to improving the quality of life of
  residents, with education, income, and basic needs now forming the
  core of its mission; and
         WHEREAS, Over the past nine decades, countless area Texans
  have benefited from the programs and opportunities provided by
  United Way of El Paso County, and it is indeed a pleasure to
  recognize the organization on the occasion of this milestone year;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the 90th
  anniversary of the United Way of El Paso County and commend the many
  donors, supporters, and volunteers who have contributed to its
  impressive record of community impact; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
