WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the | ||
passing of Marlena Morine Terry of White Oak, who died on May 27, | ||
2013, at the age of 83; and | ||
WHEREAS, The former Marlena Morine Raley was born on May 7, | ||
1930, in Veribest to James "Cot" Olan Raley and Wilhelmina Alma | ||
Marie Spieker Raley; she grew up in Junction and married Euel | ||
Jackson Smith in 1948; the couple moved to Bronte, where they raised | ||
their family and were active in the First Methodist Church; after | ||
Mr. Smith's untimely passing in 1960, Mrs. Smith found emotional | ||
support among a group of widows known as the "seven angels"; and | ||
WHEREAS, To provide for her family, Mrs. Smith went to work | ||
at Henry's Fast Food and Grocery, and a family friend, William | ||
Eppler Terry, who had also recently lost his spouse, would stop by | ||
regularly to visit with her on her coffee breaks; when the couple | ||
actually began dating, most of their evenings out were spent | ||
driving around together on Mr. Terry's night shift, while he | ||
checked wells for Standard Oil; soon the two fell in love, and on | ||
May 29, 1961, they exchanged their marriage vows; after the | ||
wedding, they moved with their blended family to Anson, and several | ||
years later they settled in White Oak; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mrs. Terry was the devoted mother of eight children, | ||
and as the years passed, she became a grandmother many times over; | ||
more than anything, she delighted in spending time with her family, | ||
and she enjoyed immensely their frequent, lively card games, which | ||
often called for her to step in as a judicious referee; she was | ||
preceded in death by her son Allen Michael Terry and by her grandson | ||
James Hughey Smith, Jr.; and | ||
WHEREAS, Deeply engaged in her community, Mrs. Terry was a | ||
member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a volunteer with Meals | ||
on Wheels; she also played an active role in White Oak United | ||
Methodist Church; and | ||
WHEREAS, Although Marlena Morine Terry is greatly missed, she | ||
will forever be remembered with deep affection by all who held her | ||
close in their hearts; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory | ||
of Marlena Morine Terry and extend sincere sympathy to the members | ||
of her family: to her husband, William Eppler Terry; to her | ||
children, James Hughey Smith and his wife, Joann, Patricia Ann | ||
Owens and her husband, Raymond, Gary Don Smith and his wife, Joy, | ||
Richard Wayne Smith and his wife, Sheron, Stephen Dennis Terry and | ||
his wife, Susan, Barbara Ruth Boone, and Mollie Jeanette Upton and | ||
her husband, Paul; to her grandchildren, Danny Terry, Joey Terry, | ||
Rusty Terry, E. J. Smith, Krystal Isgitt, Kelli Jester, Homer | ||
Owens, Jason Owens, Miranda Croft, Jeb Smith, Neely Smith, Billy | ||
Terry, Cody Terry, Mandy Munoz, Dustin Upton, Dexter Upton, Dakota | ||
Upton, and Leslie Wilhelm; to her 26 great-grandchildren; to her | ||
brother, Olan Raley; to her sister, Minnie Pearl Hooker; to her | ||
lifelong friend, Rosemary McAlexander; and to her other relatives | ||
and friends; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Marlena | ||
Morine Terry. | ||
