R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, The unique musical heritage of Texas has greatly
  enriched the state, the nation, and the world; and
         WHEREAS, Distinctive styles such as Texas country, Tejano,
  and western swing were pioneered in the Lone Star State, and many
  culturally significant artists representing a wide range of musical
  genres have called Texas home; among them are Blind Willie Johnson,
  George Jones, T-Bone Burnett, Jim Reeves, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison,
  ZZ Top, Selena, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Janis Joplin, and Willie
  Nelson, to name but a few; and
         WHEREAS, In 2013, artists and music professionals from the
  Lone Star State were nominated for 28 awards during the 55th Annual
  Grammy Awards ceremony; the nine Texans who won awards work in a
  broad variety of categories and include such performers as Beyonce,
  from Houston, who won Best Traditional R&B Performance, Lecrae,
  also from Houston, who won Best Gospel Album, and Esperanza
  Spalding, from Austin, who won Best Jazz Vocal Album; and
         WHEREAS, The Recording Academy, the organization responsible
  for the Grammy Awards, established a Texas chapter to serve the
  state's music community in 1998; one of 12 regional centers that
  link the academy to its membership, the Texas chapter serves as a
  catalyst to unite the state's music community and promote education
  programs; moreover, it supports the Latin music industry in
  partnership with the Latin Recording Academy; and
         WHEREAS, Music plays an integral part in the economy of
  Texas; nearly 150,000 jobs throughout the state are tied to the
  music industry, and live festivals generate hundreds of millions of
  dollars annually; in recognition of the importance of this
  commercial sector, the Texas Legislature established the Texas
  Music Office in 1991 to promote and support the state's music
  industry; and
         WHEREAS, The cultural and economic contributions of
  musicians are essential to the vitality and prosperity of the Lone
  Star State, and these talented men and women are indeed deserving of
  recognition; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize February 26, 2013, as Texas Grammy
  Music Day and celebrate the crucial role that the music industry
  plays in the Lone Star State.
