R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Mal Fowler is being inducted into the East Texas
  Coaches Association Hall of Honor at a ceremony in Texarkana on
  February 25, 2017; and
         WHEREAS, A member of the Class of 1949 at Van High School,
  where he was a three-sport athlete, Mr. Fowler competed in football
  and track at Texas Christian University; following his graduation
  from TCU in 1954, he began his coaching career as an assistant at
  Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, and in 1957 he was named head
  football coach at VHS; and
         WHEREAS, Moving from one alma mater to another, Mr. Fowler
  next served as an assistant football and head track coach at TCU
  from 1961 to 1965 before returning to his former post at Van High;
  he went on to helm the Vandals for 23 seasons, and he piloted the
  team to the 1979 University Interscholastic League 2A state title;
  in 1988, he accepted the head coaching position at Canton High
  School, from which he retired in 1993; during his notable career, he
  compiled an overall record of 197 wins, 135 losses, and 8 ties, and
  the Van Independent School District paid tribute to his
  distinguished service at VHS by naming the field inside Van
  Memorial Stadium in his honor in 2013; and
         WHEREAS, For nearly four decades, Mal Fowler served as an
  inspiring mentor and motivator to countless student-athletes,
  instilling in them the values of hard work, sportsmanship, and
  commitment to excellence, and he has indeed earned a place among the
  legendary coaches of East Texas; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Mal Fowler on his induction into
  the East Texas Coaches Association Hall of Honor as a member of the
  Class of 2017 and commend him on his many achievements; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Coach Fowler as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
