| Dorothy Barbara Williams Bickham | ||
| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and | ||
| commemorates the life of Dorothy Barbara Williams Bickham, who | ||
| died in June of 2013 at the age of 88; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Dorothy Barbara Williams was born June 19, 1924, | ||
| in Oklahoma City to Beatrice and Edwin Williams; she was a | ||
| graduate of Douglass High School, where she played violin in the | ||
| orchestra and was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps and the | ||
| Girl Reserves; and | ||
| WHEREAS, She earned a bachelor's degree in music from Fisk | ||
| University, and while she was studying for her master's degree at | ||
| the University of Michigan, she met her future husband, Luzine | ||
| Bickham; and | ||
| WHEREAS, After their marriage, the couple moved to | ||
| Houston, and Mrs. Bickham began a long and fulfilling career as | ||
| an educator; over the years, she had a profound impact on the | ||
| lives of thousands of students; she was a beloved teacher who | ||
| instilled in her students a sense of pride and a lifelong love of | ||
| learning; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced her faith in her | ||
| daily life, Mrs. Bickham was a faithful, longtime member of | ||
| Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, where she served | ||
| as Chancel Choir pianist for more than 40 years; she was also a | ||
| member of numerous committees and ministries and was honored as | ||
| Mother of the Year in 1981 by the Servettes; and | ||
| WHEREAS, She was active in many community organizations, | ||
| including the Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta | ||
| Sorority, Incorporated, the Friends of Houston Ebony Opera | ||
| Guild, and the Parkwood Drive Civic Club; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she | ||
| gave generously to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued | ||
| counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew her; and | ||
| WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, | ||
| and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by | ||
| her family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd | ||
| Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere | ||
| condolences to the bereaved family of Dorothy Barbara Williams | ||
| Bickham; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
| Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
| memory of Dorothy Bickham. | ||
