A BILL to amend the Code of Virginia by adding in Article 9 of Chapter 6 of Title 46.2 a section numbered 46.2-724.1, relating to stolen license plates.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding in Article 9 of Chapter 6 of Title 46.2 a section numbered 46.2-724.1 as follows:

§46.2-724.1. Theft of license plates; notices.

Whenever a license plate is stolen and the person to whom such license plate was issued notifies the Department directly or through law-enforcement authorities of the theft, the Department shall cancel or invalidate such license plate and issue replacement license plates to such person. Any such replacement license plate shall be effective only for the current registration period of the stolen license plate. The Department shall include a notice that such license plate has been reported stolen in the Department's database and in any data released to third parties regarding such license plate. Every person who has given a notice of theft pursuant to this section shall immediately notify the Department if such license plate is recovered. The Department, upon request of the person to whom the license plate was issued, may reactivate such recovered license plate and cancel or invalidate the replacement license plate.
