WHEREAS, George Burbank Walker of Mathews, a retired educator and respected expert in the field of radiation technology, who was admired in the community for his sense of adventure, died on October 5, 2015; and WHEREAS, a native of Hampton, George Walker cultivated a love of sailing from a young age; he competed in local races, attended the Wooden Boat School in Maine, and was a longstanding member of the Hampton Yacht Club; and WHEREAS, for many years, George Walker inspired youth and worked to impart his love of lifelong learning as an educator in Hampton Public Schools; during summers, he worked in the Newport News shipbuilding industry, where he gained experience in radiation control; and WHEREAS, George Walker accepted a position with the Tennessee Valley Authority at Brown's Ferry Nuclear Plant in Alabama, then returned to Mathews as a senior radiation protection technician at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility; and WHEREAS, deeply respected for his wealth of knowledge and expertise, George Walker was one of the few radiation professionals in the country to be listed on the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists; and WHEREAS, an avid traveler, George Walker explored the American west by train, rode the Olympic bobsled track in Lake Placid, New York, and researched his family lineage in Scotland; as a member of the Middle Peninsula Amateur Radio Club, he also communicated with fellow radio operators around the globe; and WHEREAS, George Walker will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Judith; children, Robert and Kelly, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of George Burbank Walker, an educator, respected expert in radiation technology, and active member of the Mathews community; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of George Burbank Walker as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
