HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 337
Commending Rosebud Baptist Church on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.

Agreed to by the Senate, March 4, 2010

WHEREAS, the Rosebud Baptist Church of Lunenburg County and its faithful congregation celebrate their historic 100th anniversary in 2010; and

WHEREAS, the Rosebud Baptist Church was founded in 1910 as the Rosebud Sunday School, and the name "Rosebud" was given to the early church by Mrs. Bettie Hardy, who compared the group to a new rose flower budding; and

WHEREAS, on January 18, 1910, the first trustees, R.E. Morse, Joel Hardy, and Samuel Hardy, signed the deed for two acres of land in Lunenburg County, one for the church building and community activities and another for a cemetery; and

WHEREAS, John Lou Bridgeforth, Jr., built Rosebud Baptist Church with lumber and supplies generously donated by Waverly Shell and other local residents; and

WHEREAS, Rosebud Baptist Church was opened to the community with the Reverend Harrison Bagley as its first minister; and

WHEREAS, through the years, Rosebud Baptist Church has been blessed with dedicated pastors, including the Reverend Harrison Bagley, the Reverend David Garland, the Reverend William H. Winston, the Reverend Theodore Wood, the Reverend Robert W. Jackson, and the Reverend Clarence A. Greenhill; and

WHEREAS, Rosebud Baptist Church has been served by hard-working and committed deacons, such as Littleton Johnson, James Jones, John Lou Bridgeforth, Sr., Leonard Bridgeforth, Willie Hawthorne, Gilbert Hawthorne, Victor Ragsdale, Harry Ragsdale, Sr., Wilson Alexander, Carlvet Lee, Charlie Johnson, and Richard Goode; and

WHEREAS, former church clerks were Mrs. Betty Hardy, Mrs. Thelma Hardy Johnson, Mrs. Ella Bridgeforth Fowlkes, Mrs. Gracie Johnson, Mrs. Mabel Bridgeforth, Mrs. Dorothy Ragsdale, Mrs. Geraldine Seward, Mrs. Fannie Walker, and Ms. Patricia Watkins; and

WHEREAS, the transportation ministry began when Robert Wilkerson and Cecil Shell, Sr., donated a small bus to Rosebud Baptist Church, which the congregation sold in order to purchase its first van; and

WHEREAS, two young men who grew up in the church accepted God's call to the ministry and were licensed to preach, Carlvet Lee in 1999 and Richard Goode in 2008; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Rosebud Baptist Church has continually expanded its programs and services at the church and for people in need in the community; and

WHEREAS, Rosebud Baptist Church added a much needed fellowship hall in 1978; renovations were made and new classrooms, pastor's study, and baptistery were constructed in 2002; and six acres of land for future improvements were purchased in 2007; and

WHEREAS, currently, Rosebud Baptist Church's minister is the Reverend Waverly E. Brown, Sr.; deacon is Cecil Shell, Sr., church clerk is Mrs. Barbara N. Shell, and van-care steward is James W. Logan; and

WHEREAS, throughout its long history, Rosebud Baptist Church has provided its devoted congregation, its neighbors, and the community a place to worship, to help others, and to grow in faith and service; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Rosebud Baptist Church on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Waverly E. Brown and the congregation of Rosebud Baptist Church as an expression of the General Assembly's best wishes for a joyful celebration and future success in their ministry.
