HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 410
Commending Newton-Lee Elementary School.

WHEREAS, Newton-Lee Elementary School in Ashburn works to honor the memory of the victims of the attacks on September 11, 2001, while providing important historical context to students; and

WHEREAS, Newton-Lee Elementary School, part of Loudoun County Public Schools, opened in 2005 and is named for Christopher C. Newton and Dong Chul Lee, both of whom lived in the area and were passengers aboard American Airlines Flight 77 when it was hijacked and struck the Pentagon; and

WHEREAS, every year, the students and staff of Newton-Lee Elementary School honor the memory of the school's namesakes, and each class receives age-appropriate information about the history and legacy of September 11; and

WHEREAS, as part of the annual September 11 commemoration, Newton-Lee Elementary School raises a freedom flag in a memorial garden also dedicated to Newton and Lee; and

WHEREAS, Newton-Lee Elementary School's unique instructional program has given countless students a better understanding and appreciation for this watershed moment in American history; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Newton-Lee Elementary School for fostering a better understanding of the attacks on September 11, 2001, among its students; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Newton-Lee Elementary School as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the school's contributions to young people and commitment to honoring the memory of the victims of September 11, 2001.
