HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 872
Celebrating the life of Dr. Howard William Lee.

WHEREAS, Dr. Howard William Lee, a retired pastor and college president from Danville, died on December 29, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Canada, Dr. Lee graduated from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, and received his master's and doctoral degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Lee moved to Danville, where he served as the pastor of West Main Baptist Church from August 1944 until June 1971; during his tenure he also held denominational positions that required him to write curriculum and develop educational materials; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Lee served as the assistant president of Averett College from 1971 until 1979, before assuming the role of interim president and then president of the college until 1985; upon retirement he was named president emeritus; and

WHEREAS, through his participation in many civic organizations, leadership roles in Danville, and support of individuals as pastor of his church, Dr. Lee worked to strengthen families and foster a strong sense of community; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Lee valued education, communication, and all forms of personal growth, and dedicated his life to helping others achieve intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually; and

WHEREAS, among his many awards and honors, Dr. Lee was recognized by the Kiwanis Club as an Outstanding Citizen of Danville for his contributions to the community; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Margaret, and son Howard, Dr. Lee will be fondly remembered by his son David, his five grandchildren, his nine great-grandchildren, and the many family members, neighbors, and friends who knew him; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Dr. Howard William Lee; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Howard William Lee as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
