HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 134
Celebrating the life of August Moon.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 19, 2024
 

WHEREAS, August Moon, a music producer, entertainer, entrepreneur, and volunteer activist, touched countless lives in the Richmond community and beyond through his commitment to excellence in all his endeavors; and

WHEREAS, born Alexander Randolph in the Blackwell neighborhood of Southside Richmond, August Moon grew up during the Great Depression and gained an appreciation for the importance of building a strong sense of community and supporting people in need; and

WHEREAS, after serving the nation as a member of the United States Navy, August Moon returned to the Southside of Richmond and became known as the "Mayor of Hull Street" for his devotion to servant-leadership and his outsized impact on local life; and

WHEREAS, August Moon was a champion for social justice who volunteered his leadership and wisdom to organizations like the Richmond Crusade for Voters, Rainbow Coalition, United Struggle Movement, and Stop the Violence Campaign; and

WHEREAS, over the course of his career, August Moon performed under many other stage names, including Little Red, Dickie Diamond, Chief Comrade, and Mouth of the South; he released several albums as Mr. Wiggles and opened the Mr. Wiggles Restaurant, along with other business ventures; and

WHEREAS, August Moon operated several recording studios and record labels, including Sound of Soul, Urban Beat, and Golden Triangle; and

WHEREAS, as a manager of the Richmond-based soul music group, The Whole Darn Family, August Moon co-produced the hit song "Seven Minutes of Funk," which has been sampled by more than 30 rap and hip hop artists, including Jay-Z, Grandmaster Flash, Coolio, Faith Evans, and the Wu-Tang Clan; and

WHEREAS, August Moon was well-known in Richmond as the host of the "Tell It Like It Is" talk show that ran for more than eight years on public access television and through which he conducted engaging interviews with activists, city officials, and local and national political figures; and

WHEREAS, August Moon will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife of 44 years, Michon; his children, Cheryle, Lorenzo, Alfonso, Sidell, Rochelle, Tiffany, Enjoli, and Sesha, and their families; bonus children, Tiwanda and Ryan; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of August Moon, a pillar of the Richmond community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of August Moon as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
