WHEREAS, Areen Syed, a talented young writer in Virginia Beach, was selected as the Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate in 2023; and
WHEREAS, the Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate program was developed by Teens with a Purpose, Hampton Roads Youth Poets, and Urban World to engage with high schools throughout the Commonwealth to identify students like Areen Syed who were interested in performance poetry and committed to civic engagement and community leadership; and
WHEREAS, Areen Syed was a 17-year-old student at Norfolk Academy and had been honing her writing skills at Teens with a Purpose for about a year when she was awarded the title of Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate in April 2023; and
WHEREAS, having suffered persecution over her Muslim faith, Areen Syed often draws upon her life experiences to use poetry as a tool to promote understanding and convince other people to open their hearts and minds to different perspectives; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Areen Syed hereby be commended on her selection as the 2023 Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Areen Syed as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her achievements and best wishes for the future.
