HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 232
Commending Corey Thornblad.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 10, 2016

WHEREAS, Corey Thornblad, an innovative and dedicated social studies teacher at Kilmer Middle School, was named the Fairfax County Public Schools 2016 Outstanding Teacher; and

WHEREAS, Corey Thornblad, who teaches honors history, was recognized for fostering a love of history in her students, tirelessly working on behalf of the special education population and general education students, and developing innovative ways to make writing and thesis work engaging and accessible for students; and

WHEREAS, focusing on the individual needs of students, encouraging their talents, and fostering self-esteem are central to Corey Thornblad's teaching style; no putdowns are allowed in her classroom, creating a safe and caring environment where all students feel accepted; and

WHEREAS, helping students succeed is one of Corey Thornblad's goals; the young people in her classes often are immersed in the past; they reenact historical events in the classroom as a way to make distant events come alive and create a desire to learn more about what they have just studied; and

WHEREAS, in trying to develop her students' cognitive skills and foster the ability to think and write like historians, Corey Thornblad helped develop the ThesisAlive! Workshop; students learn how to use source material and construct a thesis, and the popular program was the genesis for the Bubble Up Classroom website that promotes critical thinking and writing in social studies classes; and

WHEREAS, additionally, Corey Thornblad has been an informal instructional and technology leader, encouraging her colleagues to use technology and developing other professional learning opportunities; she has served on a countywide cohort that fosters the use of technology in social studies classrooms; and

WHEREAS, Corey Thornblad, who earned a bachelor's degree from the University of the South and a master's degree from The George Washington University, has worked for the Fairfax County Public Schools since 2004; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Corey Thornblad, a social studies teacher at Kilmer Middle School, hereby be commended for being honored as the Fairfax County Public Schools 2016 Outstanding Teacher; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Corey Thornblad as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect and congratulations for her exceptional work and innovative efforts to instill a love of history and learning in her students.
