Commending Coretha Gravely.

WHEREAS, Coretha Gravely, a dedicated law-enforcement officer who built strong bonds based on trust and mutual respect with members of the public during her 32-year career, retired from the Martinsville Police Department in 2023; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of George Washington Carver High School, Coretha Gravely worked at American Furniture for 15 years before changing careers and joining the Martinsville Police Department on March 1, 1991; and

WHEREAS, Coretha Gravely was one of the original officers assigned to the Martinsville Police Department's Community Oriented Policing Unit when it was formed in 1994, and she remained with that unit for 29 years; and

WHEREAS, since joining the Martinsville Police Department, Coretha Gravely has worked hand-in-hand with organizations like the Special Olympics, Relay for Life, the Boys & Girls Club, Martinsville City Public Schools, Seniors and Law Enforcement Together, the Senior Citizens Academy, Night to Shine, and many others; and

WHEREAS, Coretha Gravely has been involved with annual National Night Out events, which bring law-enforcement officers and residents together to promote safety and build a sense of community; she also played an instrumental role in establishing good relationships with neighborhoods throughout the city with the Neighborhood Watch Program; and

WHEREAS, Coretha Gravely was named the Martinsville Police Department's Officer of the Year in 2000, the Exchange Club Officer in 1999 and 2002, and the Fontaine Ruritan Club's Officer of the Year in 2003; she has received dozens of letters of commendation and countless letters of appreciation, earning the utmost respect from the residents of Martinsville and her fellow officers and staff members of the Martinsville Police Department; and

WHEREAS, throughout her career, Coretha Gravely has enjoyed the love and support of her husband, Billy, and her sons, Lee and Corey; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Coretha Gravely hereby be commended on the occasion of her retirement from the Martinsville Police Department; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coretha Gravely as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her decades of loyal service to the members of the Martinsville community.
