HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 333
Commending Carter's General Store and Deli.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 6, 2024
 

WHEREAS, Carter's General Store and Deli, a family-owned business in Lynch Station that provides delicious, homemade food, along with groceries and other goods, has served the local community for 145 years; and

WHEREAS, Carter's General Store and Deli (Carter's Store) was established in 1879 by Lewis Crawford Carter in a building that was constructed in the early 1800s and originally served as a store that sold tack, feed, and lumber; and

WHEREAS, ownership passed to Charles Lewis Carter in 1916, and Carter's Store eventually began processing and selling tomatoes and peaches under the Moon's Mountain label; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, the government purchased the Carter's Store's canned goods and shipped them to the Pacific Theater, where, according to family legend, a member of the Carter family ate Moon's Mountain tomatoes in a mess hall in New Guinea; and

WHEREAS, Carter's Store was subsequently owned by Calvin Perrow Carter from 1961 to 2008 and Lee Carter from 2008 to 2011; in 2019, Kyle Hunter Goldsmith, whose mother was a Carter, purchased the store to keep the business in the family; and

WHEREAS, located on Route 43, Carter's Store still sells groceries and general goods and fuel, while operating a full-service deli that serves all-day breakfast and old-fashioned lunch fare; and

WHEREAS, Carter's Store is a staple of community life, serving as a local meeting place and convenient stop for travelers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Carter's General Store and Deli hereby be commended for its 145 years of contributions to the community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kyle Hunter Goldsmith, owner of Carter's General Store and Deli, as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the store's long history and legacy of service.
