WHEREAS, the Elizabeth River Project, an organization incorporated in 1993 with a mission to restore the environmental health of the Elizabeth River, will host the grand opening of the Pru and Louis Ryan Resilience Lab on June 1, 2024; and
WHEREAS, the Pru and Louis Ryan Resilience Lab, the latest endeavor of the Elizabeth River Project, is an educational facility in Norfolk designed to serve as a global model for urban coastal resilience; and
WHEREAS, the Elizabeth River Project created the Ryan Resilience Lab in response to the Hampton Roads Region experiencing the highest rate of sea level rise on the East Coast, with the Elizabeth River located at the epicenter of this challenge; and
WHEREAS, located on both Knitting Mill Creek and one of Norfolk's busiest commercial corridors, North Colley Avenue, the Ryan Resilience Lab will be the Elizabeth River Project's most compelling platform yet for engaging the Region in environmental stewardship; and
WHEREAS, the Ryan Resilience Lab aims to address sea level rise, one of the most urgent issues impacting the Hampton Roads Region today, by educating visitors on the threats posed by sea level rise and by setting out practical solutions for residents and businesses to employ to mitigate its effects; and
WHEREAS, through its Ryan Resilience Series, an assortment of on-site events, exhibits, and other programs, the Elizabeth River Project intends to bring the community together to promote understanding and awareness of various climate and environmental issues and concerns; and
WHEREAS, by providing a model for a resilient and sustainable future, the Ryan Resilience Lab promises to amplify the Elizabeth River Project's efforts to enhance the environmental health of the Elizabeth River and its ecosystems; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Elizabeth River Project hereby be commended for its mission and objectives on the occasion of the grand opening of the Pru and Louis Ryan Resilience Lab; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to representatives of the Elizabeth River Project as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the organization's achievements and best wishes for its continued success.
