WHEREAS, Lloyd Clinton Martin, a respected community banker and an active civic leader who enhanced the lives of his fellow Southwest Virginia residents, died on March 8, 2018; and
WHEREAS, a native of Lee County, Lloyd "Sonny" Clinton Martin grew up in St. Charles and served his country as a member of the Third United States Infantry Regiment, the oldest active duty regiment in the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, Sonny Martin began his 60-year career in banking at Lee Bank & Trust, then joined the Jonesville-based Powell Valley National Bank (PVNB) in 1979 as a loan officer; he worked his way up to become president and chief executive officer and helped the bank grow and establish branches throughout Southwest Virginia; and
WHEREAS, throughout his tenure as president and chief executive officer of PVNB, Sonny Martin built strong, personal relationships with members of the community and always maintained an unparalleled commitment to customer service; after his retirement, he continued to provide his wise leadership to the PVNB Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS, Sonny Martin was well-known in the banking industry, serving as a respected member of the Virginia Bankers Association Board of Directors, and he was a champion for the economic vitality of Southwest Virginia, with a focus on enhancing transportation in the region; and
WHEREAS, in addition to serving for six years on the Pennington Gap Town Council, Sonny Martin was a member of the Commonwealth Transportation Board from 1996 to 2002, when he became the rural at-large member of the board; and
WHEREAS, Sonny Martin led efforts to reopen a hospital in Lee County, and he volunteered his time and leadership as a 32nd degree Mason, a charter member of Cedar Hill Country Club, and a member of the Saint Charles Lions Club; and
WHEREAS, a patriotic member of the community, Sonny Martin proudly represented the 9th Congressional District of Virginia as an elector in the Electoral College during the 2004 presidential election; and
WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Sonny Martin enjoyed fellowship and worship with the congregation of First Baptist Church of Pennington Gap; and
WHEREAS, Sonny Martin will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving wife of 59 years, Joyce; his daughters, Virginia and Karen, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Lloyd Clinton Martin, a true Virginia gentleman who devoted his life to the Southwest Virginia community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lloyd Clinton Martin as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
