HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 589
Commending Cathy Smith Train.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, May 30, 2018

WHEREAS, Cathy Smith Train of Albemarle County will step down as president of the United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area after three decades of exceptional leadership and service to the community; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of the University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce with a background in banking and real estate, Cathy Smith Train joined United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area in 1988; and

WHEREAS, Cathy Smith Train used her deep personal connections and knowledge of the region to guide the United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area through periods of growth and transition, including changes to funding applications, reviews of community needs, and a refocusing of the organization's role in the community; and

WHEREAS, under Cathy Smith Train's pragmatic leadership, United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area has helped countless individuals and families become productive, self-sufficient, and more engaged members of society; and

WHEREAS, Cathy Smith Train has overseen the creation or continued operation of beneficial programs such as the Child Care Scholarship, Smart Beginnings, the Information Referral Center, and grants to help adults and children gain access to health insurance or free prescriptions, and she implemented the Cville Tax Aid and RxRelief Prescription Assistance programs, which have created a $61.8 million direct economic impact on the local community over the past 10 years; and

WHEREAS, Cathy Smith Train initiated the United Way Day of Caring to promote the spirit and value of volunteerism while increasing awareness of local agencies and schools; the event has inspired thousands of local residents to donate tens of thousands of volunteer hours toward the betterment of the community; and

WHEREAS, respected for her honesty and attention to detail, Cathy Smith Train leads by example and has been a trusted friend and mentor to her fellow members of the United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area; and

WHEREAS, Cathy Smith Train has received numerous awards and accolades for her work, including the 2010 Athena Leadership Award, an international honor that recognizes people who demonstrate excellence, creativity, and initiative; and

WHEREAS, Cathy Smith Train has also volunteered her time and leadership to enhance the quality of life in the area as chair of the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce, president of the Albemarle Rotary Club, and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church; and

WHEREAS, after her esteemed tenure with the United Way, Cathy Smith Train plans to spend more time with her family and seek new opportunities to continue to serve the community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Cathy Smith Train hereby be commended for her leadership of the United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Cathy Smith Train as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her generosity, compassion, and hard work on behalf of people in need.
