SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 182
Celebrating the life of Arthur Stuart Nachman.

WHEREAS, Arthur Stuart Nachman, a real estate professional, a proud member of the Rotary Club of Herndon-Reston who touched countless lives through his commitment to philanthropy, and a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died on July 25, 2023; and

WHEREAS, in 1919, Arthur Nachman's grandparents, Julius and Anna, purchased a building on Lynn Street in Herndon to open Nachman's clothing store, a momentous decision that ensured the Nachman family would be a fixture of local life for more than a century; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Nachman was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Herndon, where he worked at Nachman's clothing store in his youth; the business served local residents for 75 years and ownership of the building eventually passed down to Arthur's father, Melvin; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Nachman attended Herndon High School and was a talented bass drummer in the school band; he continued to hone his musical abilities as a student of the University of Wisconsin; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Nachman was a partner in the firm Nachman's, Inc., and a commercial real estate broker with Long & Foster, and after inheriting their family's building on Lynn Street, he and his brother, Howard, located their real estate firm on the top floor and turned the ground floor into commercial space, which is now home to Green Lizard Cycling; and

WHEREAS, highly admired in his career field, Arthur Nachman provided his expertise to the Fairfax County Board of Equalization of Real Estate Assessments; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Nachman was a past president of the Rotary Club of Herndon-Reston and the winner of the club's 2012 Citizen of the Year award; he applied the Rotary Four-Way Test to all his personal and professional endeavors, adhering to the principles of truth, fairness, building good will, and benefiting others; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Nachman took great pride in giving back to his community; he was a loyal alumnus of Herndon High School and facilitated hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations for music scholarships, tuition, instruments, instructors, field trips, and other initiatives that greatly benefited local young people; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Nachman regularly visited band rooms throughout Herndon schools and frequently attended concerts, rehearsals, and sporting events; he organized a coalition to build one of the first turf fields in Fairfax County at Herndon High School after once watching an event that was affected by heavy rains; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Nachman arranged for professional musicians to visit local elementary schools as part of a master clinician program he helped create, and he was a strong advocate for the arts, providing generous assistance to the Council for the Arts of Herndon and its public art projects, including murals that grace the outdoor walls of downtown Herndon businesses; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Nachman was deeply dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all his fellow Herndon residents and often attended Herndon Town Council meetings, where he earned the admiration of council members for his courteousness, curiosity, and wise insights; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Nachman will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Sharon; his children, Grace and Stuart, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Arthur Stuart Nachman, a pillar of the Herndon community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Arthur Stuart Nachman as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
