SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 196
Commending the Glenvar High School boys' tennis team.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, March 6, 2024
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 7, 2024

 

WHEREAS, the Glenvar High School boys' tennis team secured the program's first state title since 1996 with a victory in the Virginia High School League Class 2 state championship in 2023; and

WHEREAS, the Glenvar High School Highlanders took an early 4-2 lead in singles matches, then clinched the win in doubles matches against the Bruton High School Panthers; and

WHEREAS, senior Marco Gustafson set the tone early, winning two sets 6-2 and 6-1 to secure the Glenvar Highlanders' first point of the day; and

WHEREAS, Logan Garner scored another point with 6-0 and 6-2 wins, followed by Alec McIlwain with 6-4 and 6-4 wins, and Blaine Bishop, who won his first set 6-3, then recovered from a deficit in his second set to win 7-5; and

WHEREAS, Blaine Bishop and Alec McIlwain sealed the overall win in doubles play with dominant 6-0 and 6-1 victories against Bruton High School's top doubles team; and

WHEREAS, the successful season was a tribute to the skill and hard work of all the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of coaches and staff, and the enthusiastic support of friends, family members, and the entire Glenvar High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Glenvar High School boys' tennis team on winning the Virginia High School League Class 2 state championship in 2023; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Bob Haynie, head coach of the Glenvar High School boys' tennis team, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the team's athletic accomplishments.
