SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 523
Celebrating the life of Henry S. Branscome.

WHEREAS, Henry S. Branscome, a businessman, entrepreneur, and resident of Williamsburg, Virginia, died on February 17, 2011; and

WHEREAS, after coming to Williamsburg in 1953, Henry Branscome established Henry S. Branscome Inc. in 1956, one of his many successful businesses and one of the largest multi-faceted heavy construction companies on the East Coast; and

WHEREAS, Henry Branscome, a beloved employer and creative builder, constructed many of Virginia's highways and interstates; and

WHEREAS, following the emergence of Henry Manufacturing Company, Henry Branscome created and·patented the Concrete Cyclone Reclaimer, a device used by concrete companies worldwide; and

WHEREAS, Henry Branscome, was an owner of Olde Mill Golf Course and contributed to the development of Powhatan Shores and Banbury Cross; and

WHEREAS, Henry Branscome played an active and vital role in community life as an elder in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a contributor to the construction of the church's chapel; and

WHEREAS, devoted to helping those in need, Henry Branscome was well-known for his philanthropic actions and service to those in his community; and

WHEREAS, Henry Branscome will be fondly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Lavelle Martin Branscome, his five children, Jeanette, Judy, Joyce, Jacqueline, and Henry, his 17 beloved grandchildren, and by the many friends and community members his life influenced; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Henry S. Branscome, a respected businessman and innovative developer; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Henry S. Branscome as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
