AN ACT

 

establishing The task force on best practices in physical education and behavior management.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:

Section 1.  Task force on best practices in physical education and behavior management; review, consideration and adoption of task force recommendations; delayed repeal

A.  The task force on best practices in physical education and behavior management is established consisting of the following members who are appointed by the state board of education:

1.  The principal of a school in a school district in this state or the principal of a charter school in this state.

2.  The superintendent of a school district or charter school.

3.  The parent of a child who attends a district or charter school.

4.  A person with experience or training, or both, in physical activity.

5.  A physical education teacher who is employed by a school district or a charter school in this state.

6.  A representative of an organization that provides advice on school health matters.

7.  The director of a physical education program of a school district in this state.

8.  An employee of the department of education who is a physical activity coordinator.

9.  A university professor of a physical education teacher education program.

B.  The state board of education shall select one of the appointed members to serve as the task force chairperson.

C.  The task force shall:

1.  Examine, evaluate and make recommendations concerning the best practices for educating and encouraging physical activity in Arizona schools that may also include nutrition recommendations.

2.  On or before August 20, 2015, submit a written report that contains the task force's findings and recommendations to the state board of education, the state board for charter schools, the governor, the speaker of the house of representatives and the president of the senate. The task force shall provide a copy of this report to the secretary of state.

D.  The task force may use the services and expertise of the staff of the department of education and the state board for charter schools.

E.  The state board of education and the state board for charter schools shall make the best practice recommendations submitted by the task force available to all school districts and charter schools in the state.

F.  On or before June 30, 2016, each school district governing board shall conduct a public meeting to review and consider the adoption of the best practice recommendations submitted by the task force pursuant to this section.  The governing board may modify the best practice recommendations if the governing board determines that modifications are necessary to accommodate the needs and circumstances of the school district.

G.  On or before June 30, 2016, each governing body of a charter school shall conduct a public meeting to review and consider the adoption of the best practice recommendations submitted by the task force pursuant to this section. The governing body may modify the best practice recommendations if the governing body determines that modifications are necessary to accommodate the needs and circumstances of the charter school.

H.  This section is repealed from and after September 15, 2016.
