An Act

 

amending section 15-730, Arizona Revised Statutes; relating to courses of study and textbooks.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:

Section 1. Section 15-730, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended to read:

START_STATUTE15-730. Access to instructional materials by parents and guardians; database of educational materials; definition

A. On written request, school personnel designated by the governing board shall permit allow parents or and guardians access to instructional materials currently used by or being considered for use by the school district by making available at least one copy of the instructional material materials available for review by the parents or and guardians.  Parents or and guardians may take printed textbooks, printed supplementary books and printed subject matter materials from the school district premises for a period of not more than forty-eight hours. Parents or and guardians may review all other materials, including films, only on the school district premises.

B. Beginning July 1, 2024, each school district shall maintain an online database of all educational materials used by the school district and by each individual school operated by the school district.  The school district shall make the database ACCESSIBLE and electronically searchable by the PUBLIC through the school district's website at no cost. The database shall:

1. Include electronic copies of all educational materials.

2. List for each educational material all of the following:

(a) Each school year in which the educational material is used.

(b) Each grade level for which the educational material is used.

(c) Each classroom and individual school in which the educational material is used.

3. Allow users to search the database by each field or combination of fields prescribed in paragraph 2 of this subsection.

4. Allow users to search the text of any educational material, if applicable.

C. For the purposes of this section, "educational material" includes any curriculum, textbook, lesson plan, worksheet, assigned reading, assignment, writing prompt, supplemental text, teacher guide, comprehension question, online material, primary source document, secondary source document or other similar material. This act may be cited as the "Empowering Parents Through Academic Transparency Act".
