A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 

honoring colonel doris l. caldwell for her outstanding record of military service.

Whereas, Doris Caldwell enlisted in the Women's Army Corps in December 1948, and she has achieved a remarkable record of military service. She took an honorable discharge in 1952, but in 1957 she reenlisted with a commission as a 2^nd lieutenant. Doris Caldwell served a total of 28 years before retiring with the rank of colonel in 1981; and

Whereas, Colonel Caldwell served with distinction in numerous staff and troop assignments over the years, including several overseas positions.  Among her many accomplishments, she served as personnel staff officer, administrative and personnel system management officer and recruitment officer.  Her military education included numerous courses through the Women's Army Corps on basic officer training, recruiting indoctrination, middle leadership, automated data processing and command and general staffing; and

Whereas, in recognition of her tremendous service, Colonel Caldwell has received numerous decorations, medals, badges and citations, including the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service medal, the Army Commendation medal, the Korean Service medal, the Vietnam Service medal, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Good Conduct medal. Her efforts earned her the 1995 Thomas Knowlton Award, the 2015 Woman of the Year award from the Daughters of the American Revolution and placement of her name on the veterans' wall at the Canyon Vista Medical Center. Most recently, Colonel Caldwell was named as the 2018 Veteran of the Year by the Greater Sierra Vista United Veterans Council and the Fort Huachuca Sergeants Major Association; and

Whereas, Colonel Caldwell has given generously of her time, energy and efforts over the years to numerous military organizations, including the Army Women's Museum, the Army Women's Foundation and the Coronado chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.  She was instrumental in the establishment and success of the local Women's Army Corps Veterans' Association and has remained active with both the local and national levels of this worthwhile organization. Doris Caldwell has also served the Sierra Vista community through her work with such groups as the Sierra Vista Unified School District Board, the Sierra Vista Arts and Humanities Commission, the Cochise County Merit Commission, the Southern Arizona Red Cross, the Sierra Vista Symphony Association and the Sierra Vista Community United Church of Christ; and

Whereas, individuals such as Doris Caldwell have diligently served the citizens of the United States and the State of Arizona through their sacrifice and efforts to provide for our safety and security.  It is indeed fitting that we recognize Colonel Caldwell for her years of outstanding service and many contributions to maintaining the military success and might of our great nation.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the Members of the Legislature honor Colonel Doris Caldwell for her remarkable record of service to the United States military.
