    1                           Senate Memorial                         
    2         A memorial to the Congress of the United States
    3         recognizing the death of Osama bin Laden as a positive
    4         step forward in the war on terrorism and declaring a
    5         continuing unity of commitment against terrorism, its
    6         crimes against humanity, and al-Qaeda.
    7  
    8         WHEREAS, the actions taken by Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda
    9  and its networks targeting innocent civilians, including women
   10  and children, are repugnant, and
   11         WHEREAS, Osama bin Laden was the mastermind of the
   12  September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States of America,
   13  which murdered 2,977 citizens, and
   14         WHEREAS, Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda were responsible for
   15  other terrorist attacks against the United States of America,
   16  including bombing American embassies in Tanzania and Kenya and
   17  attacking the U.S.S. Cole, and
   18         WHEREAS, a collective effort between President George W.
   19  Bush and President Barack Obama, along with the hard work of
   20  intelligence organizations and the men and women of the Armed
   21  Forces, resulted in locating Osama bin Laden, and
   22         WHEREAS, President Barack Obama took immediate action upon
   23  learning of the location of Osama bin Laden, and
   24         WHEREAS, while resisting capture, Osama bin Laden was
   25  killed on May 1, 2011, by operatives of the Central Intelligence
   26  Agency and Navy Seals, and
   27         WHEREAS, Osama bin Laden’s death provides some degree of
   28  closure as it relates to September 11, 2001, NOW, THEREFORE,

   30  Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
   31  
   32         That we recognize the death of Osama bin Laden as a
   33  positive step forward in the war on terrorism and declare a
   34  continuing unity of commitment with other states and nations
   35  against terrorism, its crimes against humanity, and al-Qaeda.
   36         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
   37  dispatched to the President of the United States, to the
   38  President of the United States Senate, to the Speaker of the
   39  United States House of Representatives, and to each member of
   40  the Florida delegation to the United States Congress.
