    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing February 2, 2016, as “FSU
    3         Day” in Florida.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State University
    6  is the oldest continuous site of higher education in Florida and
    7  is home to the state’s first chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, which
    8  was chartered in 1935, and
    9         WHEREAS, in 1994, Florida State University joined an elite
   10  group of the nation’s top research universities in being
   11  designated as a Research I institution by the Carnegie
   12  Foundation, and
   13         WHEREAS, Florida State University’s 17 independent colleges
   14  and schools offer graduate and undergraduate degrees in 332
   15  programs, taught by a faculty of 2,408 members, who have
   16  included 17 National Academy of Sciences members and 6 Nobel
   17  Laureates, and
   18         WHEREAS, one of the most academically accomplished freshman
   19  classes in Florida State University’s history is at the
   20  forefront of the institution’s exemplary achievements for the
   21  2015-2016 academic year, and
   22         WHEREAS, with an average GPA of 4.0 and an average GPA of
   23  4.4 among honors students, and median SAT scores of 1856, the
   24  nearly 6,200 freshmen who enrolled for the 2015-2016 academic
   25  year elevated Florida State University’s academic standing to
   26  new heights, and
   27         WHEREAS, Florida State University is proud to be recognized
   28  as a “Preeminent University” by the State of Florida and as a
   29  leader in education, research, student retention, and
   30  graduation, and
   31         WHEREAS, Florida State University is a nationally
   32  recognized institution with many of its colleges and programs
   33  ranked among the top 10 in the nation, and
   34         WHEREAS, in August 2015, the Florida State University
   35  College of Medicine placed its 200th alumnus physician in
   36  practice in Florida, and
   37         WHEREAS, the Office of Program Policy Analysis and
   38  Government Accountability recently reported that more Florida
   39  State University College of Medicine alumni physicians accept
   40  residencies in primary care specialties than those of any other
   41  Florida medical school, with 84 percent of FSU alumni physicians
   42  pursuing a specialty considered by the state to be in an area of
   43  need for Florida’s patients, and
   44         WHEREAS, the Florida State University College of Medicine
   45  is accomplishing its mission to produce more physicians to care
   46  for Florida’s medically underserved communities, and
   47         WHEREAS, the college experience continues to enrich the
   48  lives of Florida State University students due to the
   49  university’s long-standing tradition of promoting racial,
   50  ethnic, and cultural diversity on its campus along with the
   51  aggressive recruitment of a diverse student body, NOW,
   52  THEREFORE,

   54  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   55  
   56         That February 2, 2016, is recognized as “FSU Day” in
   57  Florida in recognition of Florida State University’s
   58  contributions as an outstanding institution of higher education.
   59         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with
   60  the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Florida State
   61  University President John Thrasher as a tangible token of the
   62  sentiments of the Florida Senate.
