A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and expressing appreciation to the Honorable Mark Burkhalter; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mark Burkhalter is a distinguished native son of the State of Georgia, born in Atlanta and raised in Alpharetta;

WHEREAS, he graduated from Milton High School and earned two B.A. degrees from the University of Georgia where he served as President of the International Relations Club and as Chair of the University's Model United Nations Delegation, leading that organization to two national titles; and

WHEREAS, after college he worked for several years at the United States Capitol and then returned to Atlanta, where he began a long and successful career in real estate development as the principal of Burkhalter Realty and Akin Properties; and

WHEREAS, he has been an active participant and leader in community and professional activities too numerous to list and is widely known and respected in the Johns Creek area; and

WHEREAS, he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1992 and has served in this body with dedication and distinction continuously since; and

WHEREAS, Representative Burkhalter served as Administration Floor Leader for Governor Sonny Perdue and was later elected as Speaker Pro Tempore of the House of Representatives in 2005, serving in that capacity until January of 2010 when he briefly succeeded to the office of Speaker of the House, making him one of the few Georgians in history to have held that high office; and

WHEREAS, all of the members of this House who have been privileged to serve with Representative Burkhalter respect him for his great abilities, his tireless devotion to the betterment of the State of Georgia, and his many outstanding legislative accomplishments.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body do hereby join in recognizing and expressing appreciation to the Honorable Mark Burkhalter.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Representative Burkhalter.
