A RESOLUTION


Celebrating the life of Marie Smith Sims; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Marie Smith was born in Forest Home, Alabama, a small town of approximately 1,500 residents located about a half hour south of Montgomery, Alabama; and

WHEREAS, she was the only child, and when her mother had to go to Atlanta to find work, she lived with her grandmother in Alabama from her birth until she was nine years old; and

WHEREAS, her earliest memories were standing next to her grandmother at the Rock West Baptist Church singing with the choir, and her very first solo at church was a gospel song, "You've Got the River of Jordan To Cross"; and

WHEREAS, in her memory of the day her mother came back to take her to Atlanta, she was in church, and, for some reason her grandmother refused to let her take her doll to Atlanta, but she reclaimed after her grandmother's death and kept it the rest of her life; and

WHEREAS, as a teenager in Atlanta, she met the love of her life, Daniel Sims, and married him at the age of 17, and their marriage lasted for 56 years and brought then two children, a son, who served and died in the Marines in 1970 and a daughter who raised Marie's two grandsons; and

WHEREAS, she has devoted a lifetime of service to the Mt. Zion Second Baptist Church, in 1990 she was recognized for 50 years of dedicated service, and in 1999 she was selected as the Mt. Zion 2rd Baptist Church Woman of the Year; her awards and recognitions for service to the Lord are too numerous to recount; and

WHEREAS, she has kept her love for singing for all her life, starting with the Mt. Zion junior choir at the age of ten years old, as an original member of the Emory Riah Searcy choir, and as a recipient of the Certificate of Recognition award for active and cooperative participation in the choir for 50 years on October 22, 2000; and

WHEREAS, it is only right and proper that this great Christian lady be honored and commended for a lifetime of service.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor and commend Marie Smith Sims for her long and fruitful life of service.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Marie Smith Sims.
