RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mr. Douglas Clare Purcell on the occasion of his retirement; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mr. Douglas Clare Purcell has long been recognized by the citizens of this state
for the vital role that he has played in leadership and his deep personal
commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
he has diligently and conscientiously devoted innumerable hours of his time,
talents, and energy toward the betterment of his community and state as
evidenced dramatically by his nearly 39 years of superlative service to the
State of Georgia in the field of tourism and historic preservation;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Purcell has served as executive director of the Historic Chattahoochee
Commission since 1972 and during his tenure the commission has funded 121 seed
grant projects in the Chattahoochee Valley, supported the publication of 31
books, erected 305 historical markers, and completed rural architectural surveys
in Clay, Decatur, Early, Harris, Quitman, Randolph, Seminole, Stewart, and Troup
counties; and
WHEREAS,
as executive director, he has placed 42 Chattahoochee Trace Heritage Education
Units in schools, libraries, and preservation groups, established the Folklife
Program, initiated the Chattahoochee Valley Threatened Landmarks Program, and
helped launch the Chattahoochee AgriTourism Project; and
WHEREAS,
a community leader, Mr. Purcell has served on numerous boards and committees in
Eufaula, including the Rotary Club, the Sesquicentennial Committee, the History
and Heritage Festival Committee, the Downtown Redevelopment Authority Board, and
the Chamber of Commerce Board, just to name a few; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Purcell's significant organizational and leadership talents, his remarkable
patience and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, and his sensitivity to the
needs of the citizens of this state have earned him the respect and admiration
of his colleagues and associates; and
WHEREAS,
he is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Purcell has served with honor and distinction with the Historic
Chattahoochee Commission, and his vision and unyielding commitment will be
sorely missed upon the occasion of his retirement; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this
remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Mr. Douglas Clare Purcell for his efficient, effective,
unselfish, and dedicated public service to the State of Georgia; congratulate
him upon the grand occasion of his retirement; and extend to him their most
sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Douglas
Clare Purcell.
