A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Pine Lake Mayor Gregory M. Zarus; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mayor Gregory M. Zarus has diligently and conscientiously devoted innumerable hours of his time, talents, and energy toward the betterment of his community and state as evidenced dramatically by his superlative service during more than nine years as mayor of Pine Lake, often serving as a volunteer as he returned his salary earnings back to the city treasury; and

WHEREAS, he was instrumental in growing the business sector in Pine Lake through annexation and incorporating properties, thus increasing sales revenue and the tax base; and

WHEREAS, he played a vital role in improving the water conditions of DeKalb County through the Snapfinger Creek Watershed Project with the formation of a storm-water utility, in which pollution levels are greatly reduced through new wetlands and dredging of Pine Lake; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Zarus improved the ecology of DeKalb County and Pine Lake through the designation of a Tree City USA and acquisition of property and increasing green spaces by 27 percent, while transforming the lands into wetlands, bird sanctuaries, and other natural habitats; and

WHEREAS, he implemented the Rockbridge Road corridor improvements through the establishment of a Downtown Development Authority, which included new sidewalks, street markings, bike lanes, and business zoning and coding; and

WHEREAS, he chartered a Community Development Housing Authority and Urban Redevelopment Plan to include senior housing; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Zarus has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that he has played in leadership and his deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize Mayor Gregory M. Zarus for his outstanding career and contributions to Pine Lake, DeKalb County, and the State of Georgia and commend him for his years of service as mayor of Pine Lake.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mayor Gregory M. Zarus.
